Socio-aesthetics of the politics of theatre in the XXIth century

Combining theatre studies, sociology and critical theory, this project aims at questioning the political functions of theatre, an art which in France and in Europe is still reputed to act as a democratic counter-power and public sphere, at a time when the Nation-State into question, capitalism has been transformed by the recent emphasis on creativity, and both transformations induce a reframing of the criticism of State and of capitalism. The analysis of the different fields (France, Europe, Latin America, Japan) will articulate the works and projects of theatre and the socio-economic organization in which they take shape, and the production process with the reception process. This project will benefit the “collège académique des arts” (COMUE) and intend to rest upon the creation of a practice-led “erasmus-plus” master, asserting Lyon's position as a center for innovation in interdisciplinary research and (academic and artistic) training, regarding arts politics and policies, at a regional, national and international level.
